What does being a picky eater mean?
Children can prefer a small range of foods, reject foods they previously enjoyed or dislike different foods touching. These patterns may appear as preferences develop. One refused meal does not define a child or explain their overall nutrition. This journal helps you remember observations rather than label every meal a success or failure.
Offer again, without a deadline
A food may feel unfamiliar on the first several occasions. Offer opportunities to explore it again over time, without expecting acceptance after a fixed number of attempts. Seeing, smelling or touching a food can be worth noting too. The journal counts recorded offers for the same food name; that count is a memory aid, not a target.
Build a calmer mealtime routine
The AAP recommends shared meals, fewer screen distractions and including a food your child already likes. Offer a small amount of something less familiar alongside it. Avoid pressure, punishment and using treats as a reward for eating. Adults provide the food; children decide whether to eat it. Involve your child in simple choices and age-appropriate preparation when practical.
Picky eater food ideas: begin with a familiar detail
Think about a texture, color or flavor your child already enjoys. A related food can be an invitation to explore, rather than a replacement that must be eaten. Let them help choose a fruit or vegetable. There is no universal menu guaranteed to work for every picky eater; prepare each food for the child’s chewing and swallowing skills.
When to talk with your pediatrician
If you are concerned about your child’s intake, growth or persistent difficulty at meals, discuss it with your pediatrician. A browser journal cannot establish whether nutrition is adequate or identify a feeding disorder. Bring your observations and questions to the conversation instead of interpreting a count as a diagnosis.
How to use your food exploration journal
Record the date, food and what you actually noticed. Use the same food name to see how many offers you recorded, and add preparation details in the context field. You can change foods and keep separate notes for each. Entries stay in this browser, so export a CSV before switching devices. Delete individual entries when you no longer need them. No acceptance score or streak is assigned.

How many tries until my child will accept a food?
There is no guaranteed number. Repeated opportunities may help, but the journal’s count is only the number of offers you recorded.
